He was part of 1960 Nashville sit-ins and Freedom Rides, served as chairman of SNCC (1963-1966), and an organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. Lewis led first of three Selma-Montgomery marches across Edmund Pettus Bridge in '65, where he was attacked; the event became known as Bloody Sunday. Elected to U.S. House of Rep. in '86, he served 17 terms and became Georgia congressional delegation dean. He strove for the Voting Rights Advancement Act to guarantee Americans' right to vote, hindered since the Shelby v. Holder decision in 2013. Voter discrimination has since escalated, blocking access to the ballot box for many. The Act would stop this and extend voting rights to all US citizens.
